ἀμφιγυήεις, a disputed word, generally explained ‘ambidextrous,’ or utrinque validis artubus instructus, which overlooks the fact that there is nothing in the word to express validis. Probably the word really means ‘with a crooked limb on each side’ = κυλλοποδίων, from a noun *γύη = crook (cf. γύης in Lexx.). This comes to the same as the old der. from γυιός, ‘lame of both feet.’ Cf. also ἀμφίγυος 13.147, etc. |
